How to prepare your cup of cacao
Preparing ceremonial cacao does not need to be complicated. At its heart, it is a simple practice of creating a moment of intention and connection within your day. Whether you enjoy cacao as part of your morning routine, before meditation, journaling, creative work, or as a moment to yourself, the preparation itself can become part of the ritual.
How much cacao should I use?
The amount of cacao depends on your intention and how your body responds to it.
For a gentle daily practice:
15–20g of cacao with around 80–100ml of warm water.
This is a beautiful amount for a morning ritual, reflection, or a moment of grounding throughout your day.
For a deeper ceremonial experience:
30–35g of cacao with around 150–180ml of warm water.
This is the traditional ceremonial serving size and is often used when cacao is combined with practices such as meditation, breathwork, movement, or guided reflection.
If you are new to ceremonial cacao, starting with a smaller amount allows you to experience how your body responds and build your own relationship with the cacao over time.
How to prepare your cacao
Warm your water
Heat your water gently, but avoid boiling it. Very high temperatures can affect the flavour and delicate qualities of the cacao.Add your cacao & mix until smooth
Place your cacao in your pot or container. Whisk, stir, blend, or use a milk frother until the cacao becomes creamy and fully dissolved.Add your personal touch
You can enjoy cacao simply on its own or add spices such as cinnamon, chilli, vanilla, or a small amount of natural sweetness if desired. I always add a teaspoon of honey as well.Create a moment of intention
Before drinking, take a moment to notice your body, your breath, and what you would like to bring awareness to. This is a powerful portal to set an intention for the day, cycle, year ahead.
My favourite recipe
Ingredients:
25g ceremonial cacao
Approx. 100ml warm water
A pinch of cinnamon
A teaspoon of nutbutter (almond is my favorite)
A teaspoon of honey
Mix until smooth and enjoy. There is no “right” way to drink cacao. The most important part is creating a moment that feels intentional and meaningful for you. And also giving your thanks in prayer to the earth, the ancient civilizations and whoever you wish to express your gratitude towards.
